| You get two mediators, instead of one. Elizabeth
Allen is a California attorney. She opened opened a divorce mediation
practice in Encinitas, California, near San Diego, in 1982. Don
Mohr's background is in social services and family therapy. He
has been providing divorce and family mediation services in San
Diego County since 1991. Both of us work together, as a team of
mediators. Our clients get the benefit of an interdisciplinary
team, as well as a male-female team.
You receive information about your legal rights in a neutral
setting during your mediation sessions.
You get legal advice from an outside "reviewing attorney"
of your choice. This is someone you choose to review your settlement
agreement before you sign it. This safeguard takes about an
hour of your time, and insures that you are thoroughly informed
about all of the ramifications of your proposed agreement, before
you sign a binding agreement.
None of our divorcing clients have had to go to court, since
we opened our practice in 1982. All of our Marital Settlement
Agreements have been signed by the judge without a court hearing,
so our clients have been spared the cost and inconvenience of
making a court appearance.
We assist each of you in negotiating a fair and balanced agreement,
one that each of you believes will work for you in the long
run.
Your agreement is tailored to meet the unique needs of your
family. No two couples are the same. We believe that your agreement
should reflect your beliefs and circumstances, and not necessarily
match what any other couple would choose to do.
We make certain that you have all of the information you need
to make fully informed decisions about the division of your
assets and debts. You get information about the value of your
assets prior to entering into an agreement about how things
will be divided. This insures that each person knows exactly
what he/she is getting, as well as what the other person is
getting.
If you have minor children, we help you develop a parenting
plan and teach you how to use a "periodic planning meeting"
to modify your schedule in the future. This is in stark contrast
to the court system, which makes no provision for the changes
that occur over time. When you complete your mediation with
Coast To Coast, you should have the tools necessary to adjust
your parenting plan without help from mediators or the court.
If you both want to discuss continuing your marriage, we will
help you develop two agreements, one about how to get your marriage
back on track and the other about your divorce, should you eventually
decide to end your marriage.
When the mediation is over, you will have a clear, detailed,
and binding agreement which you can refer to in the future,
one which addresses all of the issues that affect your family.
Before you begin your mediation, you receive a complimentary
copy of our book, Affordable Justice, how to settle
any dispute, including divorce, out of court.
