Elizabeth Allen, attorney

We have given 150 divorce and civil mediation trainings. Our divorce mediation training is 40 hours long and takes place over four and a half days. It has been approved by the Association for Conflict Resolution, the only organization in the U.S. to approve mediation training. Because many people who take our mediation training plan to do civil mediation, we include a workplace or real estate dispute which illustrates the differences between divorce and civil mediation.

Our mediation training classes offer five different ways to learn each of the ten essential mediation skills: 1) you listen to us describe the skill, 2) you read about the skill in your mediation manual, 3) you write about the skill in your mediation manual, 4) you watch us demonstrate the new mediation skill, and 5) you practice the mediation skill in a role play, where you have an opportunity to be both client and mediator.

We take you in small steps through a divorce mediation, from the initial meeting with clients through the final "signing ceremony." We show you how to move clients through the legal and emotional phases of their dispute, while staying on the task of negotiating a legally binding agreement. All of the mediation skills which we teach apply equally to team and solo mediation.

You receive our mediation manual, which contains all of the forms we have developed over the past 25 years for running an efficient mediation practice. We also give you a sample Memorandum of Understanding which contains the language that we use in mediated agreements. At the conclusion of our mediation training, you receive a mediation certificate, suitable for framing. During the mediation training, we discuss the steps you need to take to set up and promote your mediation practice.

Although the majority of our workshop participants are attorneys and mental health professionals, others, including financial planners, educators, and human resource specialists, take our training as well.
